We switched over to a new proxy server at work... gChat is now blocked... permanantly...
I raised a ticket to get it released:
"This has been enabled in the past and is quite useful to quickly message a colleague (who also has gmail) to ask them a question if they're on the phone. (not everyone acknowledges their Outlook new mail popups).
I do not have a direct url or error message, simply gchat stating: "Your Internet connection is experiencing problems or your network administrator has blocked Google Mail chat.""
The response I got?
"Sorry - access to chat is blocked. The chat category has always been blocked however the new service is more up to date than the old hence the reason the feature has now been caught. You can submit a business justification for consideration but this needs to be based on a bussiness requirement rather than personal preference."
What a load of fucking bullshit...
Honestly; the service was avaiable before... Just because you're shitty crap proxy servers aren't smart enough to pick it up, doesn't mean you have the right to close it off now.
I'm really not fucking happy, this was my main contact to the outside world in this shitty place.

you do have to remember what chat is though - it's a contantly open port in your firewall with regular traffic in and out.
from a security POV, you might as well not have a firewall.

I know what you mean, I really do, but bear in mind what I've told you about this job and how it slowly kills me processing tickets with out any technical work; this was pretty much my only point of easy contact with the outside world and it's been stolen away from me.
If they had no problems with the port being open before... *shrugs*
And besides, just because a chat port's open, doesn't leave the entire system open and at risk...
Bearing in mind who my company actually as and what they do, one chat port isn't going to make the entire company come crashing down...
(again, if they've survived this long with the port open...)
